The Lovely Bones: A Novel

  1. Jordan Rauscher Mrs. Scheller 1st The setting for my book is taken place in the 1970's in the fall right when it is starting to get cold. It is taken place in a little town with a large corn field. The setting effects the character because she was killed in a corn field, and maybe if it was not there she would not have been killed. It is also cold so she is wearing a fluff ball hat. The man who killed her used her hat as a gag to keep her quiet. Maybe if it was not cold, maybe summer, she would not have been gagged and could scream and someone could help her. If I was the character I believe it would affect me the same way.

My setting of my book is mostly taken place in pennsylvania and the after life 1973-1984. it talks about a girl name (susie salmon) who got murdered at the age 14 by her neighbor. she watches from heaven over her family Mark Wahlberg, Rachel Weisz -- and her killer Sta. As she observes their daily lives, she sees what their going throw day by day, even tho she been in haven for 4 days. that's how far I read.

"The Lovely Bones" takes place in the 1970's in a small rural town, as it's getting colder. The fact that it's 1973 as the book takes place changes how her situation was handled> Because she is a young Caucasian girl the police made it a bigger deal to find her, however if she was any other race then the police would not had made that big of an effort because this was still a time of racial prejudice. Another way that the setting effected how the characters are handling the girls disappearance is that the town they live in is small, this means that people may have still been Nivea to the fact that things like this can happen. The time of year is also a big factor of how susie handled the man, if it had not been cold out she would not have traveled through the corn field or agreed to go with her neighbor in to his "warm hide out".

I agree with you when you say that she would have been treated differently if she were of a different race in this time period. She definitely would not have been deemed "important enough" for the feds to look this deeply into her case.

The book The Lovely Bones takes place in December 6, 1973. Susie was walking home from school one evening and it was starting to get colder so she took a shortcut through a cornfield in her neighborhood. When she was almost home her neighbor, Mr. Harvey starting talking to her. While he was it started to snow. He wanted to show her a "neighborhood clubhouse" he made. She followed him into the hole in the ground covered with wood and corn stalk. This setting makes the situation a lot worse because it adds an uneasy feeling to the reader and characters. The fact that it's also cold, snowing, adn dark adds to the creepy feeling as well. She describes him as an odd person and lonely. Knowing this and what the setting is makes it more unsettling.

I agree with you when you said that because it is cold, snowing, and dark, it adds to the creepy feeling. I feel like that if it was bright and warm outside it would not have been as scary, and it is not as likely for her to go down in to his (warm) shelter.

"The Lovely Bones" starts off in the heaven of 14 year old Susie Salmon, after she was murdered on December 6, 1973. Susie looks down at earth to watch over her family and friends she left behind. As we hear more about the mystery the setting affects how the plot continues. On earth, Susie used to live in a suburban town in Pennsylvania, this affects the plot because in those kinds of towns everyone knows and trusts everyone so you would never expect you lonely neighbor to have murdered a young girl. another setting is where the murder takes place. Mr. Harvey leads our protagonist Susie to a place he made for the kids in their neighborhood little did she know that the warm and comforting place for children would be her final resting place.

The setting in "The Lovely Bones" takes place in the 1970's,in heaven but she is watching over her town. They're are many ways the setting affects the character. For an example, since she is watching over her town, she is watching how everyone is handling Suzy's death. Suzy sees over her murderer and is furious and is desperate to just go back to earth and just tell everyone who her murderer is. The setting also affects Suzy because her mood is constantly changing between each of the scenes. Another setting is in the cornfield right behind Suzy Salmons house. This plays a major role in Suzys murder. This is where one day, it was just another normal day, walking home from school but out of the cornfield her kidnapper/murderer had talked to Suzy about his nice "neighborhood hang out spot" which was where other girls had been kidnapped and murdered and Suzy had caught on to this unusual place and tried to leave. But Mr.Harvey was not going to let her escape. So Mr. Harvey had ended up raping her and killing her in the very unusual "underground neighborhood hang out spot". This is why the setting had really affected the character.

Susie Salomoan is telling her point of view from her heaven and when she is telling the story about what her family has been doing she seems very calm, but she also seems sad at the same time because of everything that her family has to go through. I disagree with that because if I was dead and had to watch my family continue their life with out me I would be super mad and sad because I was supposed to be there living out my child hood. I think she is acting that way because it has not really hit her yet that her killer is still out there and her siblings could be in danger. I think she should be more upset considering that she is dead and never going back.

I agree with you, I would feel the exact same way. Susie didn't deserve to be murdered and I feel like since she died so young, she still had at least some innocence left. Like you said, It probably hasn't really hit her yet that her family could potentially be in danger because of Mr. Harvey

    2. DO you think there is a reason that he picked Susie or do you think it was just because she had happen to be walking through the corn field that day. I believe that he had been planing it for her because of the interaction that he had with Susies parents where he had been watching her and i think that he may have took an interest in her that day.

      Delete
    3. I think it was on purpose because they literally live in the same neighborhood, the are neighbors, and they have known each other very personally. Even though he has done this to may other girls in the past i feel like he has very weirdly wanted susie for awhile now and he finally took his shot and made it in a very messed up type of way.

First, I don’t think she should be mad at all. I think she accepted the fact that she was murdered and now she just wants to make peace with that, and keep an eye on her family. Secondly, most rapist always have a target. They either look like a past significant other, or the target did something to them.

Mr. harvery, is a real mean guy,Whos a two face. in front of adults he pretends to be a nice and a sweet guy but he real isnt. Mr. harver killed mulitple females, he only kills females, he sexual harras them. he kills them so they wouldnt tell anyone what he did to them. I think Mr. harvery is acting like this because hes lonely and doesnt have nobody if he had a wife or a kid he wouldnt be acting that way.

I agree with you on the first part, however I disagree with you on the last. Yes, Mr. Harvey is lonely and doesn't have a wife and kids, but he doesn't have those things because he's a psychopath. There is so much wrong with him and I feel as though even if he did have a wife and kids, he would still act just as insane as he does without them.

      Delete
    2. I also agree with the first part because what he does to these little girls is horrible and messed up in so many ways but the fact that he is lonely most likely isn't the reason that he killed those girls. I mean lots of people are lonely and don't have a wife or kids but that doesn't mean that they are going to go out killing people. I think there has to be another reason behind why Mr.harvey is acting this way.

Mr. Harvey is a terrible person with messed up values, obviously everyone thought he was creepy and strange, however he was good at lying and covering up the fact that he murdered Susie and several other different girls. He even killed animals, and kept their bones in his basement which is clearly extremely wrong and disgusting. He's a pervert, considering he targeted young girls and raped them. I completely disagree with everything that he has done, and it angers me that he was never punished for his crimes.

Mr. Harvery is introduced into the book as being one of Susie Samoan's neighbors. The on ever interaction that Susie and her family had with Mr.Harvery previous to her murder was when her parents had a short conversation about his rose bushes as they were passing by.Without knowing much about Mr.Harvery Susie was convinced by him to come see his "secret hideout" where she would untimely reach her demise. This shows that he is convincing because he was able to convince Susie to go with him even after she had made excuses. He also is heartless because being able to lure and sexually assault a young girl and the proceed to killer is something that only a person who lacks simple emotions and has unmoral couscous could do. He is also manipulative because after her death he was able to manipulate his self out of different situations making people believe that he was innocent. I believe that he acts this way because he is a a psychopath. i do not agree with this because i think that what he did to susie is unmoral and unforgivable.

    3. I agree that mr harvey is pretty sketchy and heartless. He should not have talked to susies parents especially after murdering their daughter. You're also right about him being manipulative towards the entire town. He also should have just completely left town cause honestly he was going to get caught either way even after manipulating everyone.

In the book "The Lovely Bones" Mr.Harvey which is the Salmon's neighbor and also Susie's murderer has everybody fooled including the police with his innocent nice neighbor act. Mr.Harvey is very convincing especially when it comes to acting innocent or even persuading young naive Susie to check out the hideout he made even though he was nothing more than a stranger and her neighbor to him. Throughout the book, I noticed that his behaviors change sometimes. For example, when the detective was questioning him about Susie's murder Mr.Harvey told the detective he was making a bridal tent for his dead wife Leah although he had told Suises mother that his dead wife's name was Sophie. Another example his behaviors changed is that when Mr.Harvey was building the tent with Susie's father he got slightly hostile when Susie's father kept pressing him for information about Susie's death. Mr.Harvey is a very persuasive, manipulative, hostile person.

I agree with you Mr Harevey is a very manipulative person, he makes these girls feel comfortable, then uncomfortable, and then hurts them and rapes them. Then he made the detectives think he he was innocent and did not really know much about her death.

As the investigation of Susie Salmon is moving along, Susie’s dad and sister Lindsey can't accept that they are stopping the investigation. Susie's mom, Abigail, is disconnected with her family and won’t talk about what's happening with her and how she feels. She doesn’t talk to her children like she used to. She also keeps her distant with her husband too. She starts to think about detective Len in a different way then she used to. To “move on” from what's happening she runs off with Len while her husband is in the hospital. I don’t think Abigail should be involved with Len because her family needs her. She has a 5 year old son and a teenage daughter, as well as a upset husband, she should be there for them, they should deal with this together. Her mother, Lynn has a feeling that shes being unfaithful during a hard time and talks to her about it. Abigail doesn’t listen and instead goes over the neighbors house. I think Abigail should be there for her family so they can all help each other out.

I definitely agree that Mrs Salmons actions were uncalled for and unjustified. Especially running off with Detective Fenerman. She needed to be there for her family in good and in bad. Although, shutting out from your family is unhealthy. It is an easy way to cope with loss.

I honestly feel bad for Susie's Dad and sister because they are choosing not to give up hope for finding Susie's killer. They are still mourning their loss of their sister/daughter. If i were them i wouldnt give up either, so they did do the right thing because im pretty sure we would all want our family and friends to find our killer and not forget about us.

  13. I disagree with Mr. Harvey's behavior for pretty obvious reasons. I for sure don't like how Mr.Harvey sat there and talked to suzy's dad and was just sitting there saying oh well i'm so sorry for your loss Knowing that he had killed his neighbors daughter. He was a very good liar and he was acting all fishy because obviously he didn't want to go to jail for murder. Also, he lied to suzys dad because her dad probably would have gone to jail after killing his daughters killer. I think he should have just turned himself in or just honestly just leave town because your going to get caught eventually.

DO you think that if Mr. Harvey had not had the interaction with susie and her parents that he wouldn't have took such an interest in her and another girl would have been killed instead of her or do you think that it still would have been her that was killed.

In the first chapters of the "The lovely Bones" we discover that George Harvey rapes and murders 14 year old Susie Salmon. Then dumps her body in a sinkhole. I disagree with this because first, its illegal, and that's it. diving further in the book we discover that Harvey's wife died many years ago and he is lonely. But, that doesn't give him and excuse to commit crimes. Why could he have gotten a girlfriend? that would have been a lot better than raping a child. Mr. Harvey is a repulsive, dastardly, man.

I would consider the death of all of these girls the most important conflict of this movie. Maybe if all of these other girls would not have died then Susie Salamen would not be as motivated to uncover the murderer. But since there are a lot of other girls then susie probably wants justice for not only her self, but for all of the little girls. She knows it would not change there deaths but it would give her closure and all if them. The plot is dedicated to her helping the parents figure out the murderer and I believe susie will lead them to that.

I agree that the death of the other girls plays a big part in the development in the story and how the characters reacted to susies death. I think that susie wanted the justice for the other girls and like you said it helped her have closer but i think it also gave the other girls closure.

I agree that the death's of the other girls plays is an important factor in the book, but I would say that she is more occupied in getting justice for herself. Although, she tells a lot about the other girls, I think it's more important to her that they find that her murder is avenged.

I think that the most important conflict in "The Lovely Bones" would be susies death. Along with Susies Mr. Harvey has killed multiply girls in different places without being caught. I think this is most important to the plot because the book is built around susies death and trying to find out what happen to her> I think that it is very fitting for this book because it cool reading from the point of view where you know who the killer is and yet the other characters in the book do not and that is why i think this book is so good because it gives the reader excitement trying to find out who the killer was.

I agree that Susie's death was the most important conflict. I also hate the fact that Mr.Harvey keeps getting away with killing all of these innocent little girls. it's not fair for all of their families and the girls. I wish Mr.Harvey would not have killed Susie and she got away and got to save herself, so she could prevent this from happening to other girls, but this is more than likely going to continue.

The most important conflict in the book "The Lovely Bones" would be trying to find Susie's murder. Her family doesn't have any justice for Susie and neither do the family's of the other girls Mr.Harvey killed. The books plot revolves around trying to find out what happened to Susie and how her family and the people she care about react to it. It also revolves around how Mr.Harvey try's to cover up his tracks and how Susie watches it all from heaven. I feel like Susie's death constructs the whole book.

I think one of the most important conflicts in the book would have to be finding Susie's murderer and the impact has on her family. Their mom left them because she couldn't take it anymore so it's just Lindsay, her dad, and Buckley. The detective is picking up evidence that Mr. Harvey did kill Susie but they don't know where he is. Hal is also helping on the side and is looking around for details about if someone has been murdered nearby. The impact on Susies death is a lot harder on her dad. Lindsay moved on and Buckley still thinks about her but not as much as their dad.

I think that the most important conflict in the book "The Lovely Bones" is Susie's family and friends trying to find out Susie's murderer. I think this is important because Susie's family and friends still cant get over her death no matter how long its been, Susie's family are still mourning her death and her Dad will not get any sleep until he gets the answers hes been wanting. If i were Susie's Mom i would do the same thing her Dad did, i would be the investigator in my daughters own death, what Susie's Dad did was something all parents would've done. This goes back to why this was the most important conflict.

I definitely agree that it was completely reasonable for Mr. Salmon to be acting this way. she was their first born and they were the closest out of the three. Also I don't think Mrs. salmon is taking Susie's death very well by cheating on her husband with Len Fenerman.

The most important conflict in the book is the Salmon new family dynamic. Susie's death hit pretty hard with everyone in the family. And no one is acting the same as they used to, such as Mr. Salmons revenge plot that resulted in countless injuries. Or Mrs. Salmon's newfound lust for Detective Fenerman. Also, Lindsey is changing the way she looks so she doesn't remind herself or anyone else of Susie. Therefore, the main conflict in the book is the new dynamic of the Salmon's.
