The story is set in the country of Opium, a narrow strip of land between Mexico (now called Aztlán), and the United States. The protagonist, Matt, is a clone of El Patrón. For the first six years of his life, he lives in a small house on the edge of the poppy fields with Celia, a cook working in El Patrón's mansion. When he is discovered by three children, Emilia and Steven and Maria, he smashes a window and jumps out of the house.

I think the setting affect the characters of The House Of the scorpion because is where people have to work and live in a Big House and a farm for a drug Lord and also were the main character Matt has to hide from people from the Big house were he is not aloud to go outside of his house . I think some of the characters do not like to live in that place people some of them are immigrants were they do not really threat good . If a have to live in the environment i will not really adapt because i will not like to hide in my house where i cant go anywhere or go play with my compas ( friend ) .

The setting can effect the characters in many ways throughout any story. The House of the Scorpion takes place in a large field of poppy flowers that is not in a populated area. There is a large house for the owner of the fields and there is another house for one of the servants to live and take care of her child, Matt. The setting effects Matt's choices because he was living in a home that is not close to anyone he was used to being alone and wanted to play and meet other people. When the kids who lived in the large house found Matt he was eager to play with them so he broke a window to get out of his house. If i was thrown into Matt's situation I would also be eager to meet and play with new people. I would act similar to Matt because he was alone and did not have a lot of social interaction with other people than his mom.

The House of the Scorpion takes place in the country of Opium where Mexico and the United States have been joined together as one country in the future. The main character is a boy named Matteo who is a clone of an infamous drug lord named El Patron. The setting affects Matteo his thoughts of loneliness considering that he is always in a house or in a prison cell. It affects his actions because he usually works on something or reads when he is alone. His choices are affected because he chooses to do things that usually keeps him occupied. If I were put in the same setting Matteo, I would try everything I can to escape from the loneliness because being as lonely as Matteo can have serious mental damage. Its actually a surprise that Matteo hasn't turned crazy yet.

I agree with you. No person can endure loneliness so long. but Matt was Celia, who looked after him and held him as much as possible. Besides, he had enjoyed reading books that he always learned something new. but no book can not replace live communication with real people. This explains why the boy aspires to meet and play with other childrens in his place I would have done what Matt

The House of Scorpion takes place in a house in the middle of an expansive poppy field in the beginning of the story. This house is empty most of the time, but when Celia isn't working at the Big House, she is there to keep the main character company.

The main character, Matt, is lonely most of the time. With nobody around, Matt gets bored easily and has a growing curiosity of what is outside the small house he lives in. When three children discover him, he cannot stop himself from going outside to greet them. His curiosity overtakes him and he breaks the window to meet these children. He gets severely cut because of it and could've died.

If I was Matt, I would've been eager to escape my imprisonment to meet new people, but I probably wouldn't break the window just to see them.

I think you did a great job of explaining the stories main ideas and points. I would also be eager to get out of the house and meet new people and play with them. I think Celia should have let Matt go outside to play by himself or let him have some other source of occupation because she is gone so much.

The House Of The Scorpion's main charecter has the setting of a small house in the middle of a vast poppy field, away from the most of civilization. Matt has never seen another human except for Celia, his caretaker. This means Matt has never seen another human his age, so he doesn't really know the proper way to act around another person. I'm sure Matt is lonely, as Celia is the only person he's met, and she is gone most of the day. If I was in his situation, I would have eventually made a break for it, as I couldn't stand not knowing what's out there, and/or why/what is so dangerous that he can't go out there.

I like how you explained the setting very well with interesting imagery. I also like how you explained what you would do in the situation. However, I would like you include more details so people can understand the setting better. You should also include some more details or examples of Matt's loneliness. Overall you did fine and I think you understand the book very well.

I do really disagree with the actions of Celia ( Matt's mother ) because Celia does not like to Matt go anywhere and to hide in Celia's house from the People of the Big House because she thinks he is going to lose somewhere in the farm . Even though Celia is not Matt's mother because she told him that when he was a baby their parents leave him along and Celia had to take care of Matt , but the true story is that Celia is taking care of Matt because Matt he is a clone who was made it to El Patron the real Matt who is a Drug Lord . I see wrong in the part where Celia does not let go to Matt form her house because i think i should Matt have liberty . I suggest that tell him the truth of that he is a clone and let him go outside of the house and do things that everybody else does .

I agree with you because Celia is making Matt an anti social kid because he was not allowed out of the house. He hurt himself because he was being kept in the house. He was so tired of being alone for long periods of time so when the kids found him he broke a window and cut his foot because he wanted to play.

I disagree with you because Celia had to lie to keep mat safe and keep the secret that he is a clone safe. Had any of this information come out and people knew there would be severe danger for not only Matt but also Celia. An antisocial person is better than a person in danger. Yes there should be liberty for Matt but also there should be safety as well.

I disagree with you, R. Sanchez because she kept him from seeing the world for the better. He never felt sadness or pain because he was hidden from the real world. She also did that because El told her to. If Matt was not kept "prisoner" he would have been treated the same way. Someone would have found the tattoo on his foot and bullied him for being a clone.

In the book The House of Scorpions, Matt does not talk to anyone except Celia. This leads people to think that he is stupid and they also mistreat him. I disagree with Matt's choice of action because its because of this that he is mistreated by everyone in the house. Matt does this because he thinks all the people in the house are bad so he shouldn't talk to them. If Matt keeps this up then he will be more susceptible to more ill treatment. I would prefer that he talks to the people in the house that ways people won't bother him.

El Patron copied his DNA and made other humans, so he can use their parts and live longer. I do not agree with these actions because the humans are just humans and think like humans, but one day they will die because one man is too greedy to let someone else take control of the country. This also leads to a tyrant. He will live forever and control Opium. If he abuses his power, no one can stop him because he will always live. This is very selfish because no one else will live long like him. I would want to die like any normal human because that is fair.

I agree with you on how El Patron abuses clones to make him live forever and rule eternally. It is necessary to swap leaders before they become corrupt with power. In my opinion, either everyone has the power to live longer, or nobody has that power.

Clones have good uses that can benefit humanity, but they must be used for the greater good and not out of greediness.

Matt, the main character, now lives in the Big House with Celia, Tam Lin, and his only friend, Maria. When she says that she has to leave to go to School, Matt asks if he can go with her and she says no. The kids will know he is a clone and reject him.

Matt gets angry when she says this and doesn't understand what she means when she said this. Maria gets angry with him for not listening to her. This damages their friendship, the only peer-to-peer friendship Matt has.

If I was Matt, I would try to understand more of what she means when she says that I wouldn't fit in. I wouldn't let anger and frustration get in the way of a better outcome. Even if I still didn't understand, our friendship will still be healthy.

I get why Matt went out through the window, but I don't get why he jumped off of it onto broken glass. I mean, jumping off a two-story window and landing has GOT TO have a serious impact on your legs. Plus, you have all that broken glass at the bottom, so when you land, your feet basically get lacerated with shards of sharp glass. It's two dumb ideas combined to make a super dumb idea. If I was Matt, i would carefully scale off the bricks or the siding of the house, then once I was at at the bottom, I would jump out of the way of the glass.Collin Akins

    1. I think the reason Matt would do that is because he has never been taught that glass will cut you if you touch it. Celia would not have a reason to teach Matt that glass would cut you if you touched it because she never thought he would do such a thing to escape or defy her in any way.

I don't know about jumping from a tall building, though. It's common sense that falling will hurt, even if you haven't been taught.

One of the most important conflicts problems in The House Of The Scorpion is the Matt ( the clone ) is living in this farm with Celia Matt's kind of for him because , Celia is not Matt real mother but Matt consider his mother but , Celia does not want Matt to go out of the house . Celia does nut want that Matt go out because , the real Matt El patron don't want that something could happen at his because , if he die El patron won't have someone who can look like him and El patron could live more years . Also the people who live in the bug house treat his like as a prisoner because his hidden from other people and he can' go any where .I will react about this that is not fear to someone who is alive doesn't matter if that person is a clone to hide from the society and to make clone for other people so that people could live more years .

If Matt was not living with Celia one of the major conflicts wouldnt have happened. Because he was living with Celia we was able to break out and hurt himself on accident to go to the big house and lead into another conflict. This conflict lead into a larger one, making this conflict a major event in the plot.

Matt being hidden from all of the people outside didn't show him he was a clone and people do not like clones. Since he was kept hidden that built up confidence to escape the house which showed Matt pain, rudeness, and the real world around him. So him being locked up started this story, so this is a big conflict.

one conflict in this story is the fact that the main character Matt, created so he can be used for transplants to prolong El Patrón's life when his organs fail. but without knowing that he was able to escape. Matt did not know the others, he lived in his childhood home with Celia. he often saw children who played near the poppy fields and he wanted them to be. and once he broke a window and jumped out of it, Matt Parana a foot and hands. This is a problem because when the nurse came, she did not know where the boy she is worried. besides window was stamped and there was blood. The children took the Matt's to they house and there began the main story.

If Matt was not there for El Patron, he would die. That would make for a pretty major conflict if El Patron, or Matt died. They are the main focus of the story and if they died the book would be about normal people living normal lives as drug dealers. If Matt wasnt so eager to go play with the other children he would have never gone to the house to get the story going.

I consider the main conflict in the book is nobody liking or wanting to be with or around Matt. People act this way towards Matt because he is a clone and clones are saw as dirty and unclean creatures. This is important to the plot because Matt is the main character and if people don't like him it adds conflict to the story. My reaction was disbelief. I was in disbelief because Matt seems like a normal person but everyone else doesn't think so. The other clones might be dirty and unclean, or even vicious but Matt isn't like that. He was raised in a normal home by a normal person.

I agree with your disbelief that people are still treating him like that even though they have seen him act perfectly normal.

I think the reason they treat Matt badly is partially jealousy that some of them get treated with less respect from El Patron than Matt. They choose to vent their anger through abusing Matt or ignoring him.

I agree that all this treatment has been the main conflict. He grew up in fear and embarrassed being he was as clone. It was not fair that he was treated this way. He had to face this and deal with it for his entire life. If he wouldn't have faced this the outcome would have been completely different from this plot.

I think the main conflict in this book is the fact that the rest of society treats Matt as an outsiders just because he is a clone. Take the people in the house for example, they don't treat Matt as if he is a regular human being and they treat him like a beast. This leads Matt to believe that he is a beast. This conflict brings up a strong argument on what constitutes a real person because though Matt is a real person, he is treated like a beast. I like how this conflict does this. It sparks debate on a philosophical issue.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Jacob Kosier

I think the main conflict in this book is the fact that Matt, while acts, thinks, and mostly is a real person, he is treated as if he is an animal. Matt has a constant internal conflict based on what he really is. Although he acts like everyone else that he lives with, he is treated like he is an unfeeling beast.

This internal conflict Matt has affects his actions. When Matt hears that clones can't be nice, he contemplates whether to continue being nice or to live up to what he is treated like. The thought of Celia and what she would think of him gets him to be on the good side of things.

I think that things like this have a tremendous effect on a young child's mind. Their minds are easily impressionable, and how they are treated has a great effect on how they see themselves. I'm interested on how Matt will develop and what he will learn about himself.

I agree with you how a child has a great influence from his peers. This really adds to the conflict how Matt is different from other clones, but all in all, he is just treated like a animal, even though he is so much more. This relates to real-world issues, such as stereotypes. Just how in the real-world, people have different stereotypes of various races, in the book people have stereotypes of clones that don't match Matt.

I think the main conflict is whether Matt wants to grow up like El Patron or be better than him. It's like a internal conflict because Matt could just give in and be like El Patron; and be another power-hungry ruler, or he could be better than that; and be a peaceful and fair dictator. It adds to this even more considering a very complicated mystery:
Matt is a exact replica of El Patron, so he might make the same actions considering his brain his the same. But, unlike El Patron, he was exposed to a different environment. therefore, he would come out different.

I think the main conflict is Matt versus the world around him. People treat him like a beast that can murder people. The people in the house didn’t respect him until El Patron stepped in. He was half treated well. Some of the members respected him. Others just ignore him. This drove him to mostly trust the nicest people El Patron, Maria, and Celia. He had a freak out when he found out that El had caused this terrible treatment of most of this mess called Opium. He ended up fleeing when he lost trust and respect from one of the few who helped him.

The theme of the House Of The scorpion is about a man who has all the authority over people , he is El patron . And how much El Patron has the power to make clone of him so he could live more year without spending his life but with same power of his businesses in the drugs .This means to me that someone has all the power and authority to do whatever and how El Patron could has so much power to make clones of him . This theme means its importance to this because El Patron wants to make clones of him because , he wants to live his life without any problem and mostly because , his old and when he die he want to Matt the clone take his place for him and pick the businesses of the drugs . El Patron could be the nicest person but also the baddest person too . His power is to have so many works around him and the power of the drugs businesses .

The decisions that El Patron made in the story are extremely important to the story. If he did not make these decisions there would be no clones, which means no Matt, which means no good story. El Patron is the main man in the household. El Patron has all the power he wants to do whatever he wants.

The theme of House of the Scorpion is no matter what you should do what you think is the best decision. El Patron decides to make a clone and keep him alive or normal because he thought it was the right thing. El Patron also thought it was right to make a clone so he could live longer. Matt is also always trying to be nice to people even though they aren't nice to him. This is important in the book because the book revolves around making decisions. There are stories about making the wrong decision when Celia followed the "coyote." El Patron also made the deision to keep himself alive.

The theme of House of the Scorpion is that all life is precious. I find this theme meaninginful because the theme can be learned throughout the book. For example, Matt is a clone who is not treated the way a normal human being should be treated because he is a clone. If everyone knew the theme, they would consider Matt to be a human being. Take the eejits for another example, they become like robots and become slaves and no one has any regard for their lives. It is because the poor treatment of Matt and the eejits that the reader should consider the theme that all life is precious.

I agree with your theme because during this whole book Matt was fighting for equality with everyone around him. This wasn't granted until he did what no one could. He rebelled against the leaders. No one should have to prove themselves equal to be treated equal, that should be common sense.

A reoccurring theme in The House Of The Scorpion is don't judge someone based on what they are, but on who they are. This means that someone shouldn't just be judged based on their origin, appearance, or anything about them that doesn't have to do with the content of their character. People should be judged on whether they are a good or bad person and what they are or where they came from shouldn't affect how people judge them.

An example of this theme is that almost everyone in the Big House treats Matt with disrespect and disgust just because he is a clone. Only a few people realize that Matt is a nice and talented boy that can feel and have emotions. The rest of everyone treats Matt for what he is and not for the more important reason: who he is.

The theme of the House of the Scorpion is everyone should be treated the same no matter who or what they are. Matt was a clone, an outcast from everyone else. He wanted to have respect and treated fairly. He was locked up, chased, and harassed by people because they thought he was worse than them. These events made him the better person to stand up for what is right. In this book and the real world it is fair for everyone to be treated the same. This means a lot to me because that is one of my strongest opinions, and Matt has the same opinion.

The theme of this book is that technology is very dangerous to abuse, and should be used sparingly. El Patron and others put computer chips in human's brains, stripping them of their free will, thought, and humanity, turning them into organic robots. They are called Eejits. They do not act on their own ever, if left unattended, they will LITERARY STARVE TO DEATH, as they do not feel any hunger, thirst, feel warm, or cold. This diabolical inhumanity is caused by abusing technology in ways it was never even meant to be used. Cloning technology use MAY be beneficial, but people have sabotaged the clones also. Instead of a chip, they inject their brains with a poison that disables intelligence completely. This is why clones are looked down upon, because they are destroyed psychologically, and are seen as livestock. Matt was spared this terrible fate, along with his many other brothers...
but it turned out it was just all part of El Patron's plan, do them a favor so he could get a favor; donating their organs so he could live. But, in the end, technology turned against El Patron, as Celia used other technology to make Matt's heart unstable so El Patron could not transplant safely. This led to the demise of him, and the downfall of Opium. Thus, the reader should believe technology can be used horribly against, or/and wonderfully for humanity.

i greed with you about how the technology used dangerous in the book because they used to put chips the clone so they could look as the same person and or act as the same . And how the people who has the chips have feelings and could think as a normal person and that we have to treat the as the same even though they are clone in their way and also the persons who make the chips and the clone don't really have feelings because they just think in their selves of the power and money .
