My comment to this book is, in Sam's world he is in his last year of high school and he already has his college world planned out then all of a sudden his world changes and he has full responsibility of a baby that is now his first priority. The fact that this book has all the thoughts and emotions of a teenager really helps me relate to the story. The setting also takes place in present day so i can see how a baby would really effect your life in high school.

In this book Sam's dad Mitch has been very grumpy and sour about Sam keeping Max. Mitch constantly reminds Sam that Max needs to always come first and Max is Sam's responsibly and nobody else. Mitch never really makes full conversation with Sam anymore and if he does, its usually a fight. Sam and his dad had a deal that Sam's dad would help pay for all the baby costs for the first year then Sam would need to help pay rent and get a job and pay for everything but Sam's teachers are really bugging Sam to take his SAT and when he finally did, his dad found out and he was not happy because they had an agreement that Sam wouldn't go to college and he would work for a personal business. I think that Sam's dad should be more open to suggestions about Sam going to college because he could get a better education that can lead to a better job and could be a better support system for him and Max. I would suggest that Sam's dad be more open minded and show more emotion to his family.

The setting of Hanging on to Max is set in modern day time. The setting is mostly held in a school which makes it really hard for the main character because he has a child. He has to deal with going to school and trying to do all his homework and school work while also taking care of a baby all by himself because his dad doesn't really help him all that much. If I had to adapt to Sam’s environment I don’t think I could do it. I already have a hard enough time as it is with school and sports and I don’t know how I would have the time to take care a baby too.

Hanging on to Max is in a modern day setting, but still, having a child in high school is still frowned upon. So, Sam’s decision to keep Max is hard for Sam to deal with when going out in public. He doesn't like that eyes are always on him and questions like “is that your little brother?” It also doesn’t help that Sam lost his mom before Sam got his ex-girlfriend pregnant. Now it’s just Sam and his dad, who wasn’t fond of the keeping the baby idea. If I had to adapt to Sam’s life, I would also make the decision to keep the baby, even though it would be hard. I wouldn’t like the eyes always on me and having to barrow or lean on people for money for all the babies necessities.

In the book “Hanging onto Max” the main character, Sam, is a teen parent who has to deal with the challenges of graduating high school and taking care of his son, Max. The setting of the story has a big impact on how his life is affected. After having Max, Sam had to go to a different school where a day care is provided, and here he meets his middle school crush, Claire Bailey. During the book, they begin to grow as friends, and also begin to connect because they are both single parents. If I had to adapt to Sam’s situation, I feel like it would be very hard to deal with because I would have to give up a lot of things and learn how to take care of a baby.

Eva, I agree with your comment that being a teenager and having a child would be hard because your life isn't about you anymore, its now about putting your child first and taking care of all of their needs before yours. adapting to the situation would be very tough and overwhelming but id imagine it would be a lot easier with surrounding people that could help, unlike Sams situation.

Eva t, As the oldest of 7 I have to tell you some parts are harder than others but I do agree, I have to take care of all them over night and for a weekends at a time and not easy. I feel that being a parent and school would be extremely difficult, especially givin that he had to switch schools to a school with a day care.

.”Hanging onto Max” is about a teenage boy named Sam, who is trying to manage school and raising his son Max. The setting right now is school. He is dropping his son off at the day care at school. Because he is around a bunch of little kids and at school his actions are school appropriate. If I had to adapt to Sam and Max’s environment I cant really say what I would do. I would just do the best I can at being a mom and graduating school so I can get a good job so I can take care of my son.

The book "Hanging On To Max" is based on a young boy named Sam. Sam is a teen parent who has a infant named Max. Sam struggles with keeping his grades up at school, and watching over max when he gets home from school. When max was born he was forced to switch schools to one that provided a day care during the school days. If I was put into sams position and was a teen parent, their would be many challenges that go with it. Giving up all your free time to look after a child and being able to provide for a child as well would be overwhelming.

Wyatt, I completely agree with you, having a child in high school would be so overwhelming and would be a huge challenge. I don't think i could take care of a child and try and keep my grades up all at the same time. I also love hanging out with all my friends and having free time so giving that up would be really hard for me.

The book "Hanging on to Max" takes place at both Sam's school and house. Sam is the main character. He has a toddler named Max, who he is trying to raise while keeping up with his grades and going to school. The setting is important to the book because when Sam's ex girlfriend got pregnant with Max, he was forced to move to a school that had a day care. Sam is very determined to be the best teenage dad to his son. A lot of people at his school think just because he's a teenage boy with a kid, that he has to be a bad dad. It really upsets Sam. It's very hard for Sam to keep his grades up, while raising a baby. Before Max, he got really good grades and was a very good student. If i was in Sam's position, i don't really know what i would do. I can't imagine being a teen mom and having to continue to keep good grades, so i could graduate and fulfill my life as i want to. Having a baby in general can be hard work, but while in high school is probably even worst.

Abby R, I agree that everyone is thinking he is going to fail as a dad, which I don’t think is right because the fact he kept Max even though his girlfriend wanted to give him up, shows something. It shows that Sam wants Max to have his real dad in his life and give him a chance. I also think the teachers should give him a chance instead of thinking he is going to fail. You can tell by his actions he’s doing the best he can in taking care of Max.

Danielle W, i agree with what you said in your post. Raising a child and keeping up with school would be a difficult task. School can already be challenging enough, but throw a baby in the mix of that and it becomes ten times more difficult. Raising a child out of highschool would be very tiring as well so i can't imagine doing it while in highschool.

I disagree with the fact that Sam’s dad got mad at Sam for taking the SAT test, even though he did do it without telling his dad. Sam knows he can’t go to college because they don’t have the money and have to buy things for Max. Yet, I think there was no harm in taking the test, just to see his scores if maybe later in life he got the money and could get into college. I think his dad should have been proud of him and encouraged him to open his scores, instead of getting mad and telling Sam he couldn't go to college again and again. I also think telling him he was disappointed in him for taking the test was wrong because Sam just wanted to see all of his opinions.

I completely agree with you, I fell like it should be Sam's choice weather he goes to college not his father's choice. I know that they don't really have the money for college, but he could have still taken the test to see what his scores were and maybe if he gets really good scores he could possibly get a scholarship somewhere and then his dad and him wouldn't even have to pay for it.

I don’t agree with the fact that Sam didn't tell his father that he was thinking about going to college and that he didn't tell him that he was going to take the SATS. I feel like he should have just been open with this father in the first place and told him how he felt. Even though he had a deal with his father that he would go work for his dad’s friend after high school and do construction, he still has the right to change his mind. It should be his choice want he does in the future and if he goes to college not his father’s choice.

In “Hanging onto Max” Sam doesn’t like to go out in public with Max. When he does, he tells people Max is his brother. I do not agree with this because I feel that Sam is ashamed of Max. Sam acts this way because he doesn’t like to be judged by adults, which many of them do. They give him weird looks and he does not like that, but he has to accept that he made a choice that led to him having a child and it’s no one’s fault but his. He should just accept things for how they are and tell people the truth if they ask. Even though Max is too young to understand, I still feel bad for him because his own father acts ashamed of him in public.

Eva T, I agree that Sam shouldn't be ashamed to go out in public and I also feel bad for him. If people knew his story and that he chose to keep his child, then maybe people would think differently. This shouldn’t make Sam feel bad, it should make him feel proud of what he did. He did what he thought was best for Max and I think people should respect that. I believe Sam’s dad is not making this any easier on him by being ashamed and still mad at Sam for getting his girlfriend pregnant. He needs to learn to let it go and help his son out with raising his baby.

I think that the most important conflict in this story so far is when Sam is considering putting Max up for adoption because that is a major life choice that will affect everybody in his life forever. So far Sam is thinking that this is the right choice for Max and himself because Sam thinks Max deserves a better life that he cant give to him. This is important to the plot because Max is the main topic in this book and how Max changed everything in Sams life, than now that Sam wants to give Max up for adoption all the struggles and things Sam gave up wont matter anymore. I think that giving Max up for adoption is not the right choice because later in life Max might feel unwanted for feel left out that he isn't apart of his biological dads life.

It is really hard for him to make a decision because the decision he makes with affect his and Max’s lives forever. He thinks that Max deserves to have a better life and be able to get everything he wants, but giving him up with be so hard for Sam since he has raise him for so long already and he loves him so much. If I had to make this decision it would very difficult and I don’t know what I would do.

I don’t agree with Sam’s decision, about school and about how he treats max in public. I feel like because max is his son and should be his first priority that school would be more important to him then it sounds like it is. I understand raising a baby and going to school is hard but the only way to get a good job is doing good in school. I also don’t like the way he tells people max is his brother. Its almost as if he is ashamed I understand not wanting people to judge you however, that is his son and max’s input should be the first and only one he cares about not someone he sees in the store for 15 minutes.

Elleana, I think Sam should have the right to go to college. I understand how hard it will be, but it would be best for Max if Sam could get a good job by going through college. What happens if his construction job falls through? He has nothing to fall back on. Maybe he could do the construction for now, until he has enough to pay for college, and the things Max needs.

I disagree with the way Sam treats Max at public areas. He treats him like he is a burden and doesn't take credit that it is his child. He says its his brother or some other excuse not to be looked at funny. I think he should treat max with more respect and just accept the fact that he has a son instead of trying to hide the fact of the situation he is in. He should not resent having a child but instead embrace the situation he has been put in.

I dissagree with how Sam treats Sam in puplic. He treats him like he is ashamed that Max is his kid. When people ask Sam if the baby is his brother, he agrees, or when they ask about Max, he adresses him as his brother. I understand he is embarrased about being a teen father, but i feel like he should own up to it and accept it. Sam doesn't wanna be judged and i understand that, but he shouldn't care about what other people think, instead, he should start focusing more on Max. I can’t imagine how it would feel being a teen parent, but I’ve always been one to make the best of every situation and, I feel that Sam should too.

I believe the conflict is this book is between Sam and his father. His dad takes blame for Sam getting a girl pregnant, since his mom isn’t around. Sam’s dad barely talks to Sam anymore, but tries to help out with Max the best he can. You can tell there is a lot of tension between the two of them, when they are together. His dad won’t even let Sam think about college because he wants Sam to work for his friend in construction to pay his dad back for everything. I don’t think his dad should blame himself and let it all go and work on his relationship with his son.

Danielle W, i agree that the conflict between Sam and his dad is important because Sam has a lot of responsibility of his own and the way his dad brings him down all the time does not help Sams reflection of how a dad should be because Sam is still growing up himself and needs a good role model of how a dad should be so he can be a good dad to Max.

I think the major conflict in the book is between Sam and his dad. The two of them are always fighting about everything. His dad gets mad at him any time he says he wants to go out or hang out with anybody, even though he still always takes the baby with him. His dad also got mad at him when he took the SATS and didn’t tell him that he was taking it. This conflict makes things really hard for Sam because his dad won’t really help him with anything since they are always fighting, so he has to take care of a baby all by himself and juggle going to school and getting his school work done all at the same time.

Paige W, I agree with what you are saying. Sam’s dad needs to be more lenient with Sam. He always assumes Sam is going to make bad decisions when he’s with Claire. Sam understands that he made a mistake with Brittany and his dad just always makes him feel bad for it. He also shouldn't have gotten mad about him taking the SATS, because he just wanted to see what he would score on the test.

Paige I totally agree with you. I don't think it is right for Sam's dad to get mad at him so easily. Just because he made a mistake once doesn't mean he's a horrible person and it doesn't mean he's going to continue to make mistakes. I feel that his dad should have confidence in him, and he should try to encourage Sam instead of constantly bringing him down. Every time Sam is with Claire, his dad automatically thinks something mad is going to happen.

A conflict in the book that I feel is important is when Sam decides to give Max up for adoption. Though he feels it is a good idea, Claire is very against it and is upset with Sam that he has just decided to give up. Sam feels Max will have a better life if he gives him up because he loves him very much and just wants what’s best for his son. Claire thought they were going to raise their kids together and help each other and when he told her he was giving Max up for adoption I think she just felt like she had lost the connection she had with Sam.

One of the major conflicts in the book is the decision to set up max for adoption. Sam feels as if max will have a better life with someone who can take care of him more and love him more than he does. Sam also feels that he will be able to get on with his life and figure out himself more instead caring for an infant. Claire, however, is completely against the idea of sam setting max up for adoption. The reason they become so close was because they both had children and could relate to eachother in that way. When sam brought up the idea of giving max away I think she felt like she would lose touch with him or not relate anymore.

A good theme for this book would be to always think through your long term consequences and not just the short because you may think you have something under control but some times things are out of your control. In the beginning Sam thought he could take up the responsibility to take care of his son Max but as time went on Sam realized how limited his own future would be and how Sam couldn't provide for Max the way he had wanted to. This is important to the book because it delivers a significant message to teens about how hard it would really be to be a teen parent. Sam wanted to keep Max and raise him as his own but obstacles got in the way that Sam thought were to out of his reach to handle.

I believe that the theme for this book is that as long as you do what you believe is right then everything will be fine in the end. Sam thought giving Max up for adaption was the right thing to do so that max could be able to have a better life and so that other parents would be able to give max everything he wanted that Sam could not. Everything worked out in the end Sam grew up and got married and was able to have a family of his own and he was able to meet Max again when he was eighteen. He was also able to work on his relationship with his father and at the end of the book the two of them had a much better relationship then they did when Sam had Max to take care of.

The theme of my book is things may seem harder than they look. This is important because it shows that you might not always know what you’re getting yourself into, when you’re making your decision. In the book Sam decides to keep Max instead of giving him up for adoption. When he made this choice, he didn’t realize how hard it would be to raise Max on his own, with little help. It was harder than it looked. Sam’s friend wanted him to come over for dinner and told him to bring Max. Little did his friend know how much work it would be to bring Max. All the baby stuff Sam had to bring with him. It was harder than his friend thought it would actually be.

Danielle W, I agree with your theme 100%. Sam took on the role of a parent without being fully aware of what he was getting himself into. He tried to be the best parent he could be, but he didn’t think he was that. I feel that he made the right decision of giving Max up for adoption. Max needed parents that really wanted to be parents, not a parent that felt like he was obligated to just because he was the biological parent. I feel that Sam really did love Max, but did not truly want him the way a parent should.

I feel that a good theme for “Hanging onto Max” is to always do the right thing, even when someone tells you different. During the book Sam is faced with difficult times where he has to make choices that other people around him disagree with. When Max is born and Brittany decides to give him up for adoption, Sam feels that taking care of Max on his own is the right thing to do. His dad does not think it is a good idea but Sam is sure that he is making the right choice. Later on in the book though, we find out that Sam decides to give Max up for adoption. He finds it to be too difficult to take care of a child and feels that if he gives him up that he will have a better life. Claire does not agree with his decision, but he follows through with his decision anyway. Sam may have had people in his life being unsupportive of his choices, but he still made decisions based off of what he thought was best for himself and for his son Max.

I agree that sam is faced with difficult decisions in this book. It doesn't help his situation either how his father and him are constantly fighting throughout the entire book. Also Claire doesn't agree with his decision to give up max for adoption, that must have been a very difficult decision to do. However, he has his sons best interest at mind and stays true to that.

I totally agree with you Eva. Sam was faced with a hard decision on raising his child at such a young age. He chooses to give his so up because he feels like its the right choice. I don't feel like it is right for everyone to so unsupportive of his desision.

I would highly recommend this book to all ages but especially teenagers in high school because the book is based on a teenager who had a baby in high school and all of the difficulty's that he faced. I had a hard time putting this book down and was sad when i finished the book even though i was disappointed with the ending. This book has a great story line that has all real life possibility's and can happen to anybody so it was also educational is some ways.

I think the theme of "Hanging Onto Max" would be to stand up for what you think is right. In the book Max's mother Brittany wants to give up him for adoption when he is born, however, Sam doesn't agree and decides to take him and raise him on his own. Later in the book Sam finally does decide to give Max up for adoption because it becomes to much to handle in his life. Its not that he doesn't love max, but he decides this is the best decision for him and his son. Claire thinks he decision is ridiculous and thinks he should keep max and stick it out, but sam does what is best for his family and his son.

I feel the theme for this book is: always stand up for what you belive is the best choice. In the book, Max's mom, Brittney wants to give him up for adoption before he is born, but Sam doesn't feel that its right. He wants to try and raise his son on his own. Later on in the book, Sam realizes that being a teen dad is way harder than he thought. He decides to give Max up for adoption because he feels like its the right thing to do since its hard for give him the proper care. Not everyone agrees with Sam's decision, but he belives it is.
